CBA and European Public Prosecutor’s Office Investigation
Officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau detained six individuals in the Małopolska Voivodeship in connection with an investigation into alleged abuse of power by public officials and the embezzlement of public and EU funds. By decision of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, the mayor of Nowy Sącz and one of his deputies were suspended from their duties in connection with an ongoing investigation into a public procurement contract.
Between October 21 and 23, 2025, officers from the Regional Office of the CBA in Łódź detained six individuals acting to the detriment of the public interest. Among those detained were the mayor of Nowy Sącz and his deputy, as well as employees of the Nowy Sącz Fundraising and Entrepreneurship Center and the Sądecka Regional Development Agency SA.
On October 28 of this year, the delegated prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (Katowice Office) decided to suspend the mayor of Nowy Sącz, one of his deputies, and a high-ranking municipal official from their duties.
Acting to the detriment of the public interest
The investigation into suspected abuse of power by public officials of the City of Nowy Sącz and its subordinate entities between October and November 2024 is being conducted by the Regional Office of the CBA in Łódź , under the supervision of the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigation was initiated following a complaint filed by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
During the initial investigation, CBA officers seized evidentiary documentation and electronic equipment at the Nowy Sącz City Hall, the Nowy Sącz Fundraising and Entrepreneurship Center, and the Sądecka Regional Development Agency SA.
Charges against officials
The detainees were brought to the European Public Prosecutor's Office in Katowice. On October 23, 2025, the mayor of Nowy Sącz and one of his deputies were charged with committing a crime related to their positions. Two days earlier, charges were brought against four other detainees, including a high-ranking official at the Nowy Sącz City Hall. For the sake of the ongoing investigation, details of the charges cannot be disclosed at this stage.
The prosecutor filed a motion for pretrial detention against four detainees. Since the Katowice-Wschód District Court dismissed the motions for the imposition of an isolating preventive measure, the European Delegated Prosecutor intends to file appeals against these decisions.
City Mayor Suspended
On October 28, 2025, the Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor's Office decided to suspend the city mayor, one of his deputies, and a person holding a managerial position in one of the organizational units of the Nowy Sącz City Hall from their duties with immediate effect.
Additionally, the suspects were subject to preventive measures in the form of a financial bail of approximately €34,000 (PLN 150,000), a ban on entry to the City Hall, and a ban on contact with specific individuals.
