A civil servant from Wałcz detained in flagranti
A civil servant from Wałcz detained by the CBA. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe.
The officers of the CBA Regional Office in Szczecin have detained Piotr M., inspector in the District Office in Wałcz. The man was detained shortly after accepting a financial advantage of PLN 10,000 from a trader. The bribe was intended as “consideration” in exchange for not issuing an unfavourable tax decision. The CBA officers have also secured documentation at the Tax Office in Wałcz. The evidence gathered in the course of the investigation was forwarded to the National Prosecutor's Office in Szczecin, where the detainee faced corruption charges.
The man faces up to 10 years in prison. The prosecutor requested the court to apply a 3-month pre-trial detention.
The CBA recalls that individuals who got involved in corrupt practices and gave a financial advantage have the possibility to benefit from the so-called non-punishment provision under article 229 paragraph 6 of the Criminal Code.
Therefore, we call on those forced to give financial advantages to the employees of the Municipal Office in Wałcz to report to the CBA Regional Office in Szczecin. Under the Criminal Code, voluntary notification to law enforcement authorities is a condition for avoiding criminal liability if a financial or personal advantage or promise thereof has been accepted by a person in a public office. In doing so, the offender must inform about the fact before the law enforcement authorities have learnt about it from a different source, and disclose all significant circumstances of the criminal offence.
