Million-dollar fraud to the detriment of the Łódź Court
Officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau have stopped a criminal operation related to acting to the detriment of the District Court in Łódź. Officers have detained four people on suspicion of forging and concealing documents and money laundering. The investigation into this case is supervised by the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Łódź.
On 21st January 2025, officers of the CBA Branch Office in Łódź, in the form of urgent actions, detained four people, including two employees of the District Court in Łódź. According to the officers' findings, one of the detainees, a 40-year-old employee of the secretariat of one of the court's departments, was supposed to forge passed judgments by including additional decisions regarding the reimbursement of incurred costs and court fees to participants in the proceedings. The reimbursements were made on the basis of fabricated documents in which the man entered his bank account numbers. The 40-year-old used several dozen of them. He also transferred the extorted money to the bank account of his wife and a woman related to him by family, who worked in the same court secretariat. Both women were also detained by the CBA.
At the place of residence of the dishonest man, CBA officers secured the main files of several court proceedings and electronic media. The criminal activity could have lasted almost 10 years, and the man turned it into a permanent source of income. The losses of the District Court in Łódź were initially estimated at over PLN 3.1 million.
The detainees were brought to the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Łódź, where they were charged. The Court decided to apply an isolating preventive measure in the form of temporary arrest for 3 months to the man. In the case of the women involved in the procedure, the prosecutor applied financial guarantees in the amounts of PLN 50 and 70 thousand, police supervision, and a ban on leaving the country. The woman working in the Court's secretariat was additionally suspended from her duties.
